UiT makes films and develops understanding of socio-cultural conditions together with African universities. Today’s screening and presentations deal with the question of North - South collaboration, and the potential of film in cross-cultural communication.

Filmvisning:  Djeneba - a Minyanka woman of southern Mali. 59 min., 2011.

UiT makes films and develops understanding of socio-cultural conditions together with African universities. Today’s screening and presentations deal with the question of North - South collaboration, and the potential of film in cross-cultural communication.

Visual Cultural Studies (VCS) at UiT has since the early 1990s been involved in collaboration with universities in Cameroon and Mali. A common aim has been to establish Visual Anthropology as a discipline, and by this create and communicate relevant knowledge of the changing livelihood situation in the region. In 2017 VISCAM was launched, a project that involves two universities in Cameroon and one in Mali

The three VISCAM PhD students in charge of today’s program have used film both as a research method and as a tool for dissemination of knowledge.  They will screen films and give examples of how film can be used in dialogues, both in the actual research situations and with others.

Introduction to VCS/UiT’s collaboration with universities in Cameroon and Mali. By Associate Professor Bjørn Arntsen, VCS/VISCAM.

The making of Djeneba. By PhD student Bata Diallo, VISCAM.

Screening:  Djeneba - a Minyanka woman of southern Mali. 59 min., 2011.  Djeneba is a mother of nine children living in Kadioloko, southern Mali. Since her husband left the family some years ago, Djeneba and her children manage the family’s millet fields without him. Recently the eldest boy, Madou, has brought his new wife, Lidy, into the family group. In this hour-long film we explore daily life in the compound as Djeneba assumes full responsibility for her family’s needs.

Film and the development of anthropological understanding.  By PhD student Hamidou Moussa, VISCAM.

The cattle nomads of Northern Cameroon frequently experience droughts. As the neighbouring countries are exposed to wars, their possibilities of following their traditional migration routes have been restricted. Hamidou will screen extracts from his film Djam wala - water and life in Kalfou and deal with the relevance of the film in his research and in his job for an NGO that tries to improve the living conditions of cattle nomads.

Visual Anthropology at the University of Maroua, Cameroon. By PhD student Amandine Tezore, VISCAM.

At the University of Maroua, in the extreme north of Cameroon, important initiatives are taken to establish Visual Anthropology as a discipline. Graduates from Visual Cultural Studies have been recruited at the institution and a distinctive Maroua approach to Visual Anthropology is about to emerge. Films are made and used as part of the training of teachers at the Higher Teacher’s College, and Bachelor and Master’s programs in Visual Anthropology have been established. Amandine will tell more about this and screen excerpts from films made in Maroua.
