Foredrag: Mouse Modeling of Merkel Cell Carcinoma

Tannlege Olaf Aase og frues minneforelesning av

Prof. dr. Monique Verhaegen
Department of Dermatology,
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA

Monique Verhaegen has been a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor since 2013. She received her Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Biochemistry, her Master of Science (MSc) in Clinical Chemistry, as well as her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biochemistry from the University of Windsor in Windsor, Canada. She joined the University of Michigan in 2002 as a postdoctoral fellow in the Tumor Immunology and Immunotherapy Program of the Surgery Department. She later joined the Melanoma Program in the Department of Dermatology focusing on melanoma chemoresistance in the laboratory of Dr. Maria S. Soengas where she later advanced to Research Investigator.

Dr. Verhaegen now carries out research in the laboratory of Dr. Andrzej Dlugosz, where she focuses on understanding signaling pathways involved in the development and maintenance of skin cancers. For the past several years she has been developing a comprehensive research program focused on the pathogenesis of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), a rare but highly aggressive skin cancer now linked to a Merkel cell polyomavirus. Dr. Verhaegen has been developing experimental tools, including a large panel of MCC tumor cell lines as well as transgenic mouse models to identify key pathways responsible for initiation and progression of this deadly malignancy. Results from these studies may have direct translational relevance and lead to the identification of new therapeutic targets.
