In this type-along workshop, we will cover how to use OpenRefine to clean up messy data that is in tabular format(such as spreadsheet or csv).
OpenRefine is a powerful free and open-source tool you can use to quickly clean, transform, and export your data into a variety of formats. OpenRefine automatically tracks all changes you make to the raw data, so that the data processing is well documented.
Many people comment that this tool saves them months of work. Read more about the tool here https://openrefine.org
This workshop is intended for beginners who have not used OpenRefine before. We will teach you skills that are immediately useful, using lessons and datasets that allow you to quickly apply what you have learned to your own work.
We ask that you come to the sessions with the OpenRefine software installed ahead of time. You should plan to use a computer with a Mac, Linux, or Windows operating system for which you have administrative privileges. Open Refine requires Java. Please see the installation instructions and take note that OpenRefine is not compatible with the latest Java (16). We will get back to you with updated information regarding this in January, and set up a session for assistance with the installations if needed.
Participants are welcome to contact firstname.lastname@example.org for questions or help with installations.
