Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag

The world heritage rock art of Alta in Northern Norway contains thousands of engraved figures and were made between ca. 7000 and 2000 years ago. The rock engravings were most likely made on the seashore, but they now lie well above, as the land rose (and still is rising) after the Ice Age. Their appearance has changed since they were made, due to natural processes affecting the rock surfaces. This research has focused on geology – the variety and colours of the rocks, and how the engravings originally were bright and easy to see – through field work and geochemical analyses. Archaeologists have often connected the rock art of Alta to rituals, religion, and hunting magic. New studies of the figures have inspired to approach them in alternative ways. Is it possible that they also were made for the joy of it? This research suggests that the rock engravings may have been creative expressions about the things that mattered to people in their everyday life.
