The Land, the Crops and the People: Changing Cultural Patterns in a Transylvanian Microregion

Anthro Research Seminar

Title: The Land, the Crops and the People: Changing Cultural Patterns in a Transylvanian Microregion

The seminar intends to introduce a Transylvanian microregion, and to interpret some of the changes that have occurred in the past few decades. The changes I focus on are connected to how people use the land, how they grow crops and how they generally inhabit the place. From a theoretical perspective, the primary intention of the seminar is to explore how the different stages of modernity – as delimited in Zygmunt Bauman’s thought and observed on this particular field site – affect how the different generations coexist with each other. The presentation considers not only how people of different ages and modes of life live together, but also how they collaborate differently with their material and natural environment. I will consider how, through the altering of everyday activities the meaning of the place and the region changed. The seminar will be comprised of a short lecture, the screening of an experimental short ethnographic movie and a discussion.
