Highlights from the Botanic garden 2016

13.05.2016 Christensen, Karen Marie

While you look forward to the 2017 season!

1. The gentians! There is still flowering in the Garden! Many crested gentians and the tall Japanese G. triflora flower, and the group of showy Chinese gentians just start flowering now, but several are budding and will flower in October! The New Zealand gentians are white. There were no large insects with colour vision there, so blue colours were unnecessary and abandoned.

2. In the Saxifrage collection, most plants are now present as cushions or rosettes. However, some tall genera are flowering and have decorative, large leaves, partly with autumn colours.

3. Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum) in the Alps and many additional species in our Himalaya.

4. Still flowering scattered around the Garden, e.g. among the old North Norwegian garden plants. Some alpine plants flower hte second time, e.g.  Primula moorcroftiana in the Primula collection. It has its altitudinal limit at 5600 m on K2, the world’s second highest mountain, 8611 m

5. The autumn colours are advancing rapidly, e.g. on the rowan shrubs around the Garden.

6. The Rhododendron collection is attractive also during the autumn. It is without flowers, but with evergreen leaves in various shades and hues in green – many also with rusty lower surfaces.

Particularly after a night snow fall or frost we would recommend a photo safari!
