Highlights of 2017

20.06.2017 Christensen, Karen Marie

The ten higlights dispatches from Tromsø Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden in 2017.

Highlights 2017-10

1.    The rowan Sorbus ulleungensis (near the waterfall in the Primula collection)! It only grows on the small Ulleung Island in East Korea, and has the world’s finest autumn colours near Oct. 15. It is a reason of its own to visit the Garden now, like 59 000 others (new record) have done this year.

2.    Other rowans also have beautiful autumn colours, including the contrast between foliage and berries which an be red, pink or white.

3.    Gentians! Several still flower, and the Chinese ones can flower into November, even if a snow cover has come and disappeared by then.

4.    Few flowers left, but leaves are decorative, and the contrasts between the different evergreen rhododendron species are fascinating throughout the year. A frost cover improves your pictures.

5.    SUMMARY - new achievements this year:

* A new lawn near the main entrance.

* A new slope near the Bulb collection where a rocky path is surrounded by 1100 newly

planted ‘blue poppy’ (Meconopsis) plants in different colours.

* The large central part of the Buttercup family collection nhas been rebuilt.

* 500 new black permanent plant labels have been placed the Arctic, Himalaya and

Saxifrage collections – small ones without a disturbing metal framing.

* The rocky paths of the Arctic valley have been impressively rebuilt by David Acou.
