25th anniversary of Tromsø Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden

Tromsø Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden celebrates its 25th Anniversary with a two-week program 22 June to 7 July 2019


The Garden was opened on the 2 July 1994, and a major reason for the celebration is the completion of extensive rock landscape constructions made during 2007-2018.

Program (short Version)

Sat 22 June 1230 Summer concert with bronze age instruments. Short introduction about the Bronze Age and its first agriculture in the Tromsø area by prof. emer. Karl-Dag Vorren. SITE: Botanic garden, near the Stone Table

Wed 26 June 1300: Presentation of the new ‘Handbook of Svalbard Plants’ by Yoo Kyung Lee and Arve Elvebakk. A popular flora in Norwegian, English, Korean and Chinese. SITE: Botanic Garden, the Arctic Collection.

Fri 28. June 1200 A botanic excursion to Fløya, the city mountain of Tromsø. A guided tour in Norwegian and English. Meeting place: 100 m S of the Café building and Cable car station on the mountain. A cooperation between the Botanic Garden and the Botanic Association. SITE: The Fløya Mountain. Read more here.

Sat 29 June  1200 Celebration of the 25th  Anniversary of the Garden with short speeches and refreshments. Reel and tango by Yngve Stock on harmonica and premiere of the Garden’s anniversary song. Final opening of 12 years of rock landscaping by Margot Gjetmundsen, who lived in the present day garden site during 1944-1946. SITE: Botanic Garden, near the Café

Sat 29 June 1300 – 1500 Guided tours in the Garden, plant sale. Pilar Campos demonstrates water colour painting. SITE: Botanic Garden.

Sat 29 June 1800 Botanic lectures by experts from botanic gardens in Munich, Bergen and Tromsø. SITE: The Arctic University Museum of Norway (Tromsø Museum). Read more here

Sun 30 June 2000 Vin&Viten: Premiere of the film ‘Ho Hansina i Breivika – og ei historie om ekstrem forvandling’ by Sirkka Seljevold, on the history of the Bot. Garden and Campus area, in Norwegian. Introduction on the history of the Botanic Garden by its leader Arve Elvebakk.

 

JULY

Mon 1 July 0800 Botanic excursion to Guolasjávri, Kåfjord/Gáivuotna/Kaivuona. Departure from Tromsø by cars agreed on (try Facebook, if needed), to reach the Ullsfjord ferry at 0900. SITE: Guolasjávri.

Tue 2 July  ‘Guided tours in the Garden 1200 A general guided tour, partly booked. 1400: ‘The rarest and the most dangerous ones’. About red and black listed species in Norway.

Wed 3 July: ‘The green evolution – fro cyanobacteria to orchids.  A two-hour course including use of stereo microscopes. By Arve Elvebakk. Registration at arve.elvebakk@uit.no. Separate groups in English and Norwegian, SITE: Botanic garden

Thu 4 July1200 Willow – a plant to be used both by children and adults. Make your own willow flute. By Merete Ryen, in Norwegian. SITE: Botanic garden

Accessibility:
Please observe that the stairs inside the ship are very steep. Visitors not comfortable with climbing ladders are advices to stay on the main deck. Regrettably, wheelchairs can not get onboard the vessel. Due to some high thresholds and dim lighting in parts of the ship, we recommend visitors with vision impairments to be accompanied.
