Highlights of Tromsø Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden

05.06.2019 Christensen, Karen Marie

The short, but intense northern summer is over, but amidst the glowing colours of autumn there are still flowers to be seen. Keep updated with this highlights list!

HIGHLIGHTS 2019-6

From September 25

DON’T MISS:

1. The Gentian collection! Blue species will be in flower even after the snow has arriveed. The illustrated stevenagensis hybrid was photographed on Oct. 5 in a previous years.

2. Numerous rowan (Sorbus) species! Throughout the Garden you will find charming rowan species, with berries in different colours, ranging from white through pink to red, and with beautiful autumn coloured foliage. Our largest concentration is in our Himalaya, and most species originate from here and neighbouring China.

3. North Norwegian Traditional garden plants. Many tall perennials flower here until they will be cut down in late autumn.

4. Three Korean plants! The rowan Sorbus ulleungensis (near our Primula water-fall) only grows on the small Ulleung Island in Korea, and has the world’s finest autumn colours in late September. So has Mukdenia rossii, large-leaved, in the lowermost N part of our saxifrage family collection. And the elegant bell-flower Hanabusaya asiatica in flower; N of the stairs to the Siberian collection. It was described in its own genus from North Korea, but also grows in a few mountains in the South, although only in Korea, where it is an important symbol plant.

5. During late autumn, particular after a frosty night, it is nice to walk through the Rhododendron collection with its evergreen leaves in different shapes and shades of green.
