Highlights of Tromsø Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden

05.06.2019 Christensen, Karen Marie

The short, but intense northern summer means there are new busy beauties blossoming every week. Keep updated with this highlights list!

HIGHLIGHTS 2019-5

From August 7

DON’T MISS:

1. The rare Chinese gentians Gentiana hexaphylla (picture) and arethusae! They grow in the south slope of the Gentian Hill, and originate from dry mountains of China.

Gentiana hexaphylla

2. The Giant Cowslip (Primula florindae) in the Primula collection, incl. a bi-coloured form.

3. Tall perennials near the Pond and in the Tradition and Herb collections. Notice three specimens of a 2 m tall species south of the Pond received as Ligularia heterophylla. Its leaves resemble those of the banana plant!

4. Yellow Marsh Saxifrage (Saxifraga hirculus ssp. compacta) – in several places in the Arctic.

5. Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum) in the southern part of the Alps Collection. Here you can introduce it to your love without picking it or risking your life on a peak in the Alps! Actually it selfseeds with us, and in our Himalaya you can see 7 other, but similar species in flower now.

6. The Caucasus collection. Our favourite is the white bellflower Symphyandra pendula, grown in three places. Near the road is the pale blue bellflower Campanula sartorii, spreading over rocks. We don’t understand how it survived this terrible winter, because it originates from only two smaller Greek islands (Andros and Tinos) with a very different climate.
