Credit System at UiT

UiT The Arctic University of Norway uses a system of credits (studiepoeng) for measuring study activities, considered equivalent to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). 60 ECTS credits (studiepoeng) are allocated to the workload of a full year of academic study, equivalent to 1500-1800 hours of study. 30 ECTS credits are normally allocated to one semester’s full-time study. The academic year normally lasts for 10 months and runs from August to June.

The Norwegian term is "studiepoeng". 1 ECTS = 1 studiepoeng.

Short programmes at UiT is awarded after one year of full-time study (60 ECTS)

The bachelor's degree at UiT is awarded after three years of full-time study (180 ECTS)

The master's degree is normally obtained after two years of study (120 ECTS) or (90 ECTS) only for Master of Laws (LL.M.) in the Law of the Sea, following the completion of a bachelor’s degree. A master’s degree programme includes independent work (normally a thesis) of between 30 and 60 ECTS.

AVERAGE GRADE REQUIREMENTS

- Degrees issued in Norway, Europe, Canada, USA, Australia & New Zealand: An average grade C is the minimum requirement, or the corresponding numerical mark/percentage score to be eligible for admission to master's level study programmes. degree issued in Norway is the minimum requirement for admission to the master’s level.

- Degrees issued in other than the above-mentioned countries: An average grade B as a minimum requirement, or the corresponding numerical mark/percentage score to be eligible for admission to master's level study programmes.

Average grade requirement for certain countries:

The following guidelines are used for certain countries when evaluating the minimum grade requirements established for admission to master's degree programmes at UiT:

• Scales of 1-10 or percentage grades: scales vary by country. However, the required minimum average is generally 7,5-8,5 or 75%-85%.

• Bachelor's degrees from Cameroon (English-speaking part): 3,0 of 4,0 (60%) or higher 

• Bachelor's degrees from Cameroon (French-speaking part): 14 of 20 or higher (mention Bien or better)

• Bachelor's degrees from China: 75% or higher

• Bachelor's degrees from Iran: 14-15 or higher

• Bachelor's degrees from Egypt: 75% or higher

• Bachelor's degrees from Ghana: Second class upp or higher.

• Bachelor's degrees from India: 3,00 of 4, 00 (75%) or higher

• Bachelor's degrees from Pakistan: 65% or higher 

• Bachelor's degrees from Nepal: 65% or higher (merit or first distinction)

• Bachelor's degrees from Nigeria: 65% or higher (upper second class or higher)

• Bachelor's degrees from Russian Federation: 4 or higher (Khorosho (Good) or higher)

We require all transcripts from your bachelor’s degree, including transcripts of grades from exchange or study abroad semesters together with an explanation of the grading system from the issuing institution (also known as diploma supplement).
