Fish Immunology and Vaccinology

research group

Fish are valuable and interesting comparative models of lower vertebrate immunology. In the research group of Fish Immunology and Vaccinology (FIV) we are studying basic molecular mechanisms of  innate and adaptive immune systems of fish. In particular we focus on Atlantic salmon as this species is of outmost importance to the aquaculture industry. Our objective is to contribute to a deeper understanding of the immune system of teleost and aid in the development of new vaccines targeting diseases that impact fish in aquaculture. Recent projects have focused on developing a new generation of DNA vaccines for Atlantic salmon, implementation of CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing tools in salmonid cell lines and generation of basic understandings of humoral and cell-mediated mechanisms of immunity. Our in-house laboratories are fully equipped for cell culture, virology and molecular biology work. We also have access to university core facilities within genomics, advanced microscopy and proteomics. For live fish experiments state of the art facilities are available with our partner Tromsø Aquaculture Research Station. Annually we recruit highly motivated MSc students from the study program of Aquatic medicine at UiT.

The members of the scientific staff are Jaya Kumari SwainEva-Stina EdholmJorunn Jørgensen and Ingvill JensenOur main teaching responsibilities are within the study program of Aquatic medicine and in the courses of Bio-2604 Fiskesykdommer/Fish diseases and Bio-3609 Basal and Comparative immunology. We also teach relevant topics within other courses and in the study program of Fiskeri- og havbruksvitenskap.

Welcome to the first annual FIV mini conference!

This meeting provides a venue for exciting interactions to generate new ideas and collaborations. We aim to foster interactions among established investigators, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students interested in immune function in fish. We also aim to present ongoing research into fish immunology and vaccinology to potential master students at the University of Tromsø - the Arctic University of Norway.

With climate change, pollution and diseases, both wildlife and domesticated fish species used globally in aquaculture face severe challenges. The study of fish immunology provides unique insight into immunobiology, medicine and evolution and the potential for novel therapeutics for the aquaculture industry.

Here we highlight research into various aspects of fish immunology and vaccinology, including antigen presenting molecules, immune type receptors, B cells, development of immune repertoires, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing and the immune dialogue between the hosts and pathogens.
