How was it like on board the sealing vessel MS Polstjerna?

The Arctic vessel MS Polstjerna was built by K. Christensen & Co Båtbyggeri (Boat maker) in Moen by Risør. The owner at that time, Halfdan Jakobsen, was a known figure in the polar hunting community in Northern Norway. When the vessel was finished in 1949, it was specially constructed to endure the Arctic conditions.

For about 30 years, MS Polstjerna was used for seal hunting in the West Ice (between Greenland and Jan Mayen) and for many years for ice fishing along the entire Norwegian coast. After the last hunting trip in 1981 the estimated total of seals caught on MS Polstjerna was 97,000.

Learn more about Tromsø’s Arctic sea traditions with a visit on board MS Polstjerna! Here you can get an insight into how the conditions were on the vessel and see in the cabin, the galley and the control room.
