The exhibition "Gold and Green Forests?" explores the life of a gold prospector through the eyes of Tromsø native Birger Holte (born 1874). He spent many summers in Troms and Finnmark searching for gold, diamonds, and other minerals.

The exhibition sits at the intersection of cultural history, natural science, and environmental conservation. Birger Holte left behind numerous notes and diaries about the prospector's life, and we use his story to shed light on the early stages of the mineral fever in the north. We will draw connections from this past to the present-day increasing demand for minerals, the green transition, and environmental conservation. The exhibition opened in December 2024.
