Healthy appetite and no debt!

Temporary exhibition

A photo exhibition about language and belonging.

A man was asked how he was doing. He replied: "Mulla oon niin hyvä elämä. Mulla oon hyvä ruokalysti ja ei ole velkaa!" ("I have such a good life. I have a healthy appetite and no debt!")

People came from Finland to Norway over 150 years ago. In search of work and income to support themselves and their families. Many in Finnmark are descendants of people who came from Tornedalen – both Swedish and Finnish sides, or other places in northern Finland. Some call themselves Kven. Others call themselves Norwegian Finns. And some don't quite know what to call themselves. Some have pieces of language and culture with them, others don't know much about this and aren't interested in it either. Some want to know more, and there is increasing interest in Kven/Norwegian Finnish culture.

The artist Ane Huru Thorseng has spoken with elderly people in villages around the Varanger Fjord. From these conversations, she has collected Kven/Norwegian-Finnish words and expressions and combined them with her photographs.

Please note! Parts of the exhibition are located in the Museum Hall, the museum’s auditorium. The auditorium is occasionally used for closed events. Feel free to contact the museum to check whether the Museum Hall is open.
