About Polstjerna

Polstjerna (The Polar Star) is open in the summer season – see “Plan your visit” for more information.

The sealing vessel MS Polstjerna was built in 1949 and was designed to withstand the conditions of the Arctic Ocean. The vessel sailed for 33 hunting seasons and brought home more than 97,000 seals.

In the dock below the boat, you can see the exhibition SNOWHOW. The exhibition shows how the Norwegian polar “knowhow” rests on the knowledge of Arctic natives and North Norwegian Arctic seafarers – knowledge Nansen and Amundsen used in their polar expeditions.

Please observe that the stairs inside the ship are very steep. Due to some high thresholds and dim lighting in parts of the ship, we recommend visitors with mobility and vision impairments to be accompanied.

If you want to know more about polar history, we recommend a visit to the Polar Museum.
