The primary focus of the Translational Vascular Research group is the study of endothelial cells that line the inside of all blood vessels. These cells have many functions, such as providing an anti-thrombotic surface to prevent blood clotting and controlling leukocyte recruitment to tissue during inflammation. Our research is based around the identification of genes that are highly specifically expressed in endothelial cells (compared to other cell types) and the role of these genes in vascular function. Through this work, we identify potential plasma biomarker candidates for the clinical assessment of vascular health and risk stratification, diagnosis and prognosis of diseases of the cardiovascular system, such as venous and arterial thrombosis and COVID-19 complications.
