Jochen Manfred Knies

Job description

Jochen Knies is a Research Professor at UiT and the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU). He has 30 years of research experience in Arctic Marine Geology. Jochen is work package leader of the Norwegian Research Council funded Centre of Excellence “iC3 – Centre for ice, Cryosphere, Carbon and Climate” which aims to provide evidence of cryosphere-carbon feedbacks during past ice sheet change. He has recently been awarded the European Research Commission (ERC) Synergy Grant for “i2B – Into the Blue” for resolving past Arctic greenhouse climate states. He started his Arctic research in 1991 by studying contemporary ecosystem changes in fjord environments of NW Svalbard. Since then, he has been participating or leading numerous Arctic marine research cruises with the aim to understand Arctic climate evolution from the past to the present.
