Alexander Tveit

I am a microbiologist with a PhD in microbial ecology from UiT, The Arctic University of Norway. I am interested in microbial metabolisms and interactions in soils and sediments, and how microbial behavior controls carbon cycling. Currently I am leading the project Cells in the Cold (CECO) with financial support from Tromsø research foundation. This project have four main components where the aim of each is to contribute knowledge about microorganisms with an important role in global carbon cycling.

I) Atmospheric methane oxidizing bacteria.

We have isolated the first pure culture of an atmospheric methane oxidizing bacterium. Currently, we are trying to identify the dietary requirements of atmospheric methane oxidizers, the phylogenetic distribution of atmospheric methane oxidation and to understand how they are able to live on trace-gases in air.

II) Long-term soil warming effects on microbial metabolisms

Using geothermally warmed grassland soils in Iceland as a model system we study how the metabolic activities of specific microbial populations are modulated in soils affected by long term warming. 

III) Anaerobic organic matter decomposition in Arctic peatlands.

We are studying how organic matter in Arctic peatlands is degraded, which organisms are involved and how they interact. A particular focus is on syntrophy, methanogenesis and microbial food web interactions.

IV) Methane oxidizing microbial communities in open-system pingo methane seeps

Open system pingos are permafrost features found in the Arctic, many of which are outlets for sub-permafrost groundwater that can carry substantial amounts of methane. We study the microorganisms in this water and the surrounding surface area to identify how the methane was produced and the capacity of aerobic and anaerobic methane oxidizing bacteria for consuming the methane.
