    Research interests

I work at the interface of biology and microscopy - our group develops new optical microscopy techniques, and I help biologists apply them to their challenging questions in a wide range of biological systems. Topics range from arctic marine biology (e.g. investigating microplastic uptake by salmon skin cells) to antibiotic resistance/susceptibility to organoid models, amongst others. I provide support for many different parts of the research pipeline, such as choosing the right techniques to address a question, experiment design (e.g. helping choose a compatible panel of fluorescent dyes), image acquisition, and image and data analysis. I particularly enjoy matching our toolbox of skills and technologies to otherwise hard-to-solve biological problems, regardless of the type of biology. Give me a good challenge, and that is interesting in itself!

Other key areas for me are improving and developing systems to facilitate research and research administration. Particularly, developing research infrastructure for biology (including biosafety as well as lab facilities) in a physical sciences faculty has been an interesting challenge, as well as scaling up support systems to accomadate the needs of a group that has tripled in size over the last decade.

    Teaching

I provide training on the use of commercial fluorescent and label-free microscopes, basic image analysis using ImageJ, basic cell culture and sterile handling, and a range of microscopy-related topics on request. Intro to Microscopy (for biologists and computer scientists) and Intro to Cell Culture (for physicists and computer scientists) were offered as special curricula in 2022. Biosafety (for BSL2 and genetically modified material) training is provided on a regular basis to group members and collaborators as needed. I occasionally conduct workshops and provide training related to interdisciplinary science and scientific communication.

I have co-supervised master's and PhD students both formally and informally within physics and in fishery science; however, the vast majority of my teaching and outreach activities are conducted outside formal teaching structures and on an as-needed basis.
