ODO-3323 Orthodontic - 10 ECTS

Course content

Recognition and classifying (diagnosing) of malocclusions at different ages and assessing treatment need. Perform simple orthodontic treatments.

Objectives of the course

Learning goals: • To provide the students with basic knowledge on the growth and development of the dentofacial complex • To allow the students to understand the significant role of adverse growth of the jaws on the development of malocclusion • Be familiar with the postnatal growth the craniofacial complex, and to know and understand the regulation of normal dentofacial growth. • Know the development of occlusion and normal eruption timetable of the teeth. • Know the classification of occlusion and the outlines to the aetiology of malocclusions • Have a basic knowledge on orthodontic diagnosis and an understanding of the rationale and timing for appropriate interventions. • Be familiar with contemporary treatment techniques with their possibilities and limitations • Be competent at distinguishing aberrations from normal dentofacial growth and development in a growing child, and making appropriate referrals based on assessment. • Be competent to make an orthodontic diagnosis at all stages of dental development, to assess the treatment need and refer the patients to treatment. • Be able to perform interceptive orthodontic treatment with simple appliances, i.e. cross-bite corrections and/or other orthodontic measures of corresponding standard.

Language of instruction and examination

English and Norwegian.

Lectures, seminars and practical sessions

Assessment

Written 4 hours exam at the end of 9. semester. The language of the exam is English.
