autumn 2023
BIO-3033 Plant stress biology surveillance and experimental design - 3 ECTS
Type of course
The course is relevant for the Master program of "Molecular environmental biology". The course is highly relevant for the plant biology students for gaining the knowledge on the newest methods of using imaging methods for following plant growth, biomass production, stress reactions and changes in morphology and the related data handling.
Course is limited to 8 master students. Minimum number of students: 6
Course content
The lectures will provide background information on biological imaging, examples of practical research cases, and the basics of the handling of the image data. The practical course will contain setting up the experiment, imaging of stress treated plants and exercising on the handling of the research data.
The students will learn the basics of the plant phenotyping and biological imaging.
Objectives of the course
Knowledge:
- has overview of currently available plant phenotyping methods
- understands the theoretical principles of the biological imaging and plant phenotyping
- knows the advantages and disadvantages of different plant phenotyping methods
Skills:
- can operate advanced imaging instruments, such as Planteye 3D scanner and hyperspectral cameras, for investigations of plant stress responses
- can utilize data handling software for the biological images and report imaging results
