Type of course

This course can be taken as a singular course.

Recommended prerequisites
BIO-1001 Cell and molecular biology
Course contents
The course comprises an introduction to the structure and functions of eukaryotic cells, including their nuclei and cytosol. Molecular mechanisms and relevant explanatory models are emphasised. Topics that are dealt with will be the chromosome, the genome structure, gene structure and gene expression; general and specific gene control; cell cycle regulation in yeast and mammal cells; genetics and evolution of energy; organelles, organelle bio-synthesis, protein secretion, ER modification and the golgi apparatus; cell motility based on micro-filaments, micro-tubules and intermediate filaments. The lab course provides an introduction to essential molecular biological techniques applied to plant cells and includes microscope work, DNA isolation, PCR, DNA sequencing and bioinformatics.
Objective of the course
To convey general knowledge about the structure and function of the eukaryotic cell from a molecular biological point of view.
