Type of course

Theoretical and practical subject. The course is offered on condition that a minimum number of students register for the course.

Recommended prerequisites
BIO-1001 Cell and molecular biology, BIO-1003 Botany, BIO-1004 Physiology
Course contents
The course will give a thorough introduction to metabolism and function in plants, with special regard to regulation of plant growth and development and responses to environmental factors. The course focuses on functions at a plant level, but also relevant cellular and molecular mechanisms will be discussed. The lectures cover central topics for production (photosynthesis, mineralnutrition and waterbalance), vegetative growth and development, flowering and stress physiology with emphasis on cold stress. The laboratory course will give insight into selected research methods in plant physiology. The results from the exercise will be presented either oraly on a seminar or as a poster.

Teaching methods
Lectures/seminars 40 hours, obligatory laboratory exercises 40 hours, colloquiums.
Assessment methods
4 h written exam at semester end. Laboratory reports have to be approved before the exam. In addition the students are obliged to make a written assignment on a on an optional topic. The assignment has to be approved before the exam.
