Type of course

Theoretical and practical subject. The course is offered on condition that a minimum number of students register for the course.

Recommended prerequisites
BIO-1001 Cell and molecular biology, BIO-1003 Botany, BIO-1004 Physiology
Course contents

The course will give a thorough introduction into the growth and metabolism of plants, with special regard to regulation of plant growth in response to environmental factors and to the biochemistry of plants. The first part focuses on functions at the plant level while the second part concentrates on the biochemistry and molecular biology of plants. The seminars cover central topics of plant physiology and biochemistry, for example photosynthesis, mineral nutrition, growth and development and flowering and stress physiology. The laboratory course will give insights into selected research methods in plant physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology. The results from the exercise will be presented either orally in a seminar or as a poster.

Seminars 20 hours, laboratory exercises 60 hours

Assessment methods
4 h written exam at semester end. Laboratory reports have to be approved before the exam.
