BIO-1001 Cell and molecular biology, KJE-1001 Introduction to chemistry and the chemistry of biology
Course contents
The course will describe how drugs and toxic substances are handled by the body (pharmacokinetics and toxicokinetics and how they affect the organism (pharmacodynamics and toxicodynamics). Also included are how drugs and toxic substances are transported to their sites of action (absorption and distribution), how they work, how they are detoxified (bio-transformed) and removed (eliminated) from the body. Toxic reactions and effects and drug side-affects are discussed. The course also describes the development and evaluation of new drugs, as well as of drugs with an addiction potential . Herbal medicines and Sámi folk medicines are also touched upon.
Objective of the course
The course should give the student a general introduction to pharmacology and toxicology.

Teaching methods
Lectures and a compulsory semester assignment which will need to be approved prior to final exam.
Assessment methods
Written exam (4 hours). Alphabetical grades (A-F).

Coursework requirements
Semester assignment.

Re-sit eksamination
For students who did not pass their exam, or were unable to sit their exam due to medical reasons etc., we offer a re-sit examination early in the following semester.
