Course contents
The following topics are included:
Drug nomenclature,
How drugs and toxic substances act on the living organism,
How drugs and toxic substances reach their site of action,
General principles of passage of drugs/toxic substances across biological barriers,
Absorption,
Distribution,
How the action pharmacological/toxicological action is terminated,
Excretion,
Biotransformation,
General principles of the quantitative aspects of pharmacological/toxicological action,
Dose-response relationships,
Time-response relationships,
Factors modifying the effects of drugs in individuals,
Attributed to conditions of administration,
Attributed to the biological system,
Drug toxicity,
Pharmacological/toxicological aspects of drug abuse,
Drug development,
How drugs and toxic substances alter physiological function,
Classification of toxic reactions,
Measurement of acute poisoning,
Treatment of toxicity.
Objective of the course
The main aim of the course is to give the students a general introduction into human pharmacology and toxicology. After the course, the students should be able to describe how drugs and toxic substances are handled by the body (pharmacokinetics and toxicokinetics and how they affect the organism (pharmacodynamics and toxicodynamics).

Teaching methods
The topic is given each autumn semester and includes lectures (36 hours) and a compulsory semester project. The students will be appointed a supervisor for the semester project, and the project needs to be approved prior to final exam. It is also mandatory to give a presentation of the semester project for the other students.
Assessment methods
Written exam (4 hours). Alphabetical grades (A-F). The compulsory semester project needs to be approved by the teacher before the student can take the exam. The semester project is evaluated as pass/fail, but is not a part of the assessment for the grade. A supplementary exam will be arranged at the earliest convenience, for canditdates who failed the exam, or who, for valid reasons, were unable to attend.The students will be appointed a supervisor for the semester project, and the project needs to be approved prior to final exam. The date for the exam can be changed. The final date will be announced at your faculty early in May and early in November.
