Type of course
The entire course, or parts of it, is compulsory for new staff, guest lecturers and master degree students using the labs or doing field research. Students who would like to participate have to sign up on the studentweb as soon as possible. If you plan to take part 7 or 8 we need to know this preferably 1 week before these parts begin due to that Havarivernsenteret needs a list of participants in order to plan the training. This course can also be taken as a singular course. To do this, employees and Ph.D. students have to apply on-line for local admissions at the University of Tromsø (singular courses). Deadline 1. December/1. June It is possible to attend parts of the course and only receive course diploma. Please register through PEK or contact the IMB administration.
Course contents
The course will be held as an intensive course in the beginning of each semester. The course will consist of one module (part 1) lasting about 12 hrs and a minimum of 16 academic hours of subjects of the students' own choice. Attendance is compulsory for part 1 (16 h) and for the chosen subjects (minimum 16 h). OBLIGATORY PART Part 1 - EHS work 1A) Systematic EHS- Internal guidelines, records of substances and products, risk evaluation and chemical labwork 1B) First aid - (two groups, one for lab and one for field/expeditions) 1C) Preparedness within UiT - Fire protection, emergency routines, exercises SPECIALIZED MODULES: Part 2) Biological substances(10 h) Biological substances, genetically modified material, routines and regulations, zoonoses Part 3) Use of Gloves(1 h) Part 4) Allergy(2 h) Part 5) Liquid nitrogen (2 h) Part 6) Gas under pressure(2 h) Part 7) Safety on expeditions(25 h) * Theoretical and practical training at Havarivernsenteret (16 h) * Cruise and fieldwork guidelines and regulations (1 h) * Fieldwork rubber boat practices (8 h) Part 8) Safety for fieldwork (22 h) Theoretical (6 h ) and practical training (7 h) * Cruise and fieldwork regulations (1 h) * Fieldwork rubber boat practices (8 h) Part 9) Radiation safety, introductory (3 h) Part 10) Radiation safety (10 h) - Only in spring semester
Objective of the course
To provide safety skills relevant to lab work, field work or expeditions.
Language of instruction and examination
Teaching will be held in English every fall semester and in Norwegian every spring semester.
Teaching methods
Lectures, practical training and demonstrations; attendance is compulsory.
Assessment methods

Written exam 3 hours. Grade type: pass / fail

In order to take the exam students have to attend the compulsory part 1 (1A, B and C). Inn addition students have to attend a minimum of 16 hours from the specialized modules (part 2-10).

Re-sit examination
We do not offer a re-sit examination for this course. If students do not pass their exam, or are unable to attend the exam due to medical reasons etc., it is possible to register for an ordinary examination next time the course is available.

Emnet planlegges som et intensivkurs i uke 32-35. Studenter bør registrere seg til emnet på studentweben før emnet starter. Ansatte som ønsker å få studiepoeng for emnet må søke opptak som enkeltemnestudent, frist 1. juni og registrere seg via studentweben.
