Type of course
This course is obligatory for students enrolled in the Master's degree programme in Biotechnology. Provided space the course can be taken as a singular course.

MBI-2001 Biochemistry
Course contents
The course will cover various subjects: planning purification of protein, choice of source, homogenisation and preparation of extract, chromatographic separation methods, choice of purifying substance and buffers, optimisation of chromatographic separation methods and upgrading purification. Practical work comprises a choice of strategy to purify the protein, optimisation of chromatographic separation methods on a small scale, purification of protein on a large scale and analysis of purified protein.
Objective of the course
The student should be able to prepare his own purification strategy and to carry out purification, to present purification charts and to evaluate the results and purity.
Language of instruction and examination
The language of instruction is English and all of the syllabus material is in English. Examination questions will be given in English, and may be answered in either English or a Norwegian/Scandinavian language.
Teaching methods
Lectures and lab work; compulsory attendance
Assessment methods
Submitted lab report. Grade type: pass / fail.
Course work requirements: obligatory attendance.
