Course contents
In this course we will explore ways of knowing short fiction as a literary form, and ways of knowing the world through it. This includes the problem of the boundaries of the genre: defining it, identifying its literary historical development, and interpreting it through various formal, ideological, and thematic lenses. It also includes the ways in which short fiction enables readers to cross boundaries in place, time, and memory.
Objective of the course
Knowledge and understanding:
- To develop your understanding of the ways in which central theories and analytical methods can make you a better reader of texts within a particular genre.
- To better understand how social, literary historical, and cultural context have shaped the development of the short story genre.
Proficiency and competence:
- To gain confidence in your ability to interpret short fiction from several critical perspectives.
- To develop your ability to analyze and interpret narrative fiction through our focus on short stories.
- To improve your ability to explain your ideas in a succinct, coherent manner.
- To be able to support your ideas with close readings of texts as well as relevant theory.
- To increase your proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English through oral presentation, class discussion, and an academic semester paper.
Language of instruction and examination
Language of instruction and examination is English.
Assessment methods
Coursework requirement:
Oral presentation, 80% attandance in class.
Assessment method:
Term paper, 10-15 pages.
Performance in the course will be assessed with the grades A-F. Grades are A-E for passed and F for failed. A re-examination is offered in the event of an F-grade. The deadline to register for re-examination is January 15th for the autumn semester and August 15th for the spring semester.
