The biological basis of fisheries science

The course is based on themes that show marine ecology and oceanography as an integrated part of fisheries science. New and pertinent topics may vary from year to year but basic themes include trophic relationships, population concepts, recruitment processes, distribution and migration, and climatic effects. Special attention is paid to populations in boreal and arctic waters. At the start of the course the student must have basic knowledge in aquatic ecology and fish biology at the university level. The course is particularly relevant for MSc and PhD students.

The student is expected to -

1) acquire a critical understanding of the key biological and climatic processes that affect the dynamics and distribution of marine populations.

2) present a term paper both orally and in written form on a given topic.

Norwegian / "Scandinavian" (or English if required).

Lecture - 28 h, colloquium - 8 h. By the end of the course, the student gives a ~15 min oral presentation on a written term paper (~10 pp). The teaching language is in Norwegian / "Scandinavian" (or English if required) whereas literature, lecture notes, and media presentations are in English. The literature is first and foremost based on original papers from scientific journals and varies from year to year.

Oral examination (60 % of mark) and term paper (40 % of mark)
