The course can be taken as a singular course.

Course contents
The course describes the arctic environment and treats a group of important arctic animals and their physiological adaptations to the extreme environment.
Objective of the course
To give the students 1) knowledge, insight and increased awareness of the Arctic and to the physiological adaptations of the animals living in such an extreme environment; 2) training in reading and understanding scientific literature; 3) skills in discussion and oral / written presentations of problems concerning this field of science.
Language of instruction and examination
English or Norwegian
Teaching methods
Lectures based on syllabus. An obligatory expedition (14 days) with experimental studies of seal in the West ice will take place with the research vessel Jan Mayen. An obligatory report will be written after the expedition
Assessment methods
6 hours written exam based on syllabus, guest lectures and (approved) expedition report. Alphabetical grades (A-F).

The date for the exam can be changed. The final date will be announced at your faculty early in May and early in November.

First attendance: Wednesday 19.01 at 10:15, "Arctic Biology"-building. The course is limited to 20 students due to the expedition to the West Ice. Application deadline: Friday January 7. Please send application by e-mail to: Studiekonsulenter biologi if you would like to attend this course. First meeting is obligatory and more information about the course will be given then.
Seminars The seminars will be at the arctic biology building.
