Type of course
This course may be taken as an individual course. A good command of oral and written English is required.
Recommended prerequisites
ENG-1015 Introduction to English word and sentence structure, ENG-1014 English in use, ENG-1016 Introduction to English sound patterns
Course contents
The topic of this course is, firstly, the vocabulary of English, the structure of English words and their use (how new words are created or borrowed, as well as how they change their meanings in the history of English), and secondly the study of how we acquire vocabulary and how we store it in our brains.
Objective of the course

After completing the course, students should have acquired the knowledge and skills listed below.

Knowledge and understanding:

Students should

- know the most important principles of word formation in English

- be familiar with the most important theories about how we acquire, store, and access words

- have a thorough knowledge of the origin of and historical development of the vocabulary of English

Skills/proficiency:

Students should

- be able to present and discuss the knowledge they have acquired in good spoken and written English

Language of instruction and examination

Language of instruction and examination is English.

Teaching methods

The course is taught in blocks of one to two weeks per month distributed over the whole semester (4- 6 hours per week). The classes will consist of lectures, seminars/exercises, and discussions.

Assessment methods
Coursework requirements:
A paper (approx. 2000 words) + a 15 minute oral presentation of this paper.

Assessment method:
4-hour school exam.

Performance in the course will be assessed with the grades A-F. Grades are A-E for passed and F for failed. A re-examination is offered in the event of an F-grade. The deadline to register for re-examination is January 15th for the autumn semester and August 15th for the spring semester.
