Fishery biology and harvest technology
About the course
An introduction is given to the methods traditionally used to investigate exploited aquatic organisms. This includes laboratory methods for determination of population parameters, and field work for direct estimation of fish density. The concept of a model is introduced: we adapt it to widely diverse species and international fisheries, and make simple quantitative predictions of the suitability of different exploitation regimes. Harvest technology deals with a general description of the vessel and gear technology used in different parts of the world. We deal with fish behaviour, types of materials, operation methods, selectivity, and fish detection and density estimation with hydro-acoustics. New developments in the pursuit of energy efficient and environmentally friendly gear, as by-catch reduction, and user friendly gear, will be addressed.

Objectives of the course
This is a course at introductory level. Students who successfully complet the course shoud:
- be acquainted with different fishing methods and drilled on the basic field techniques, analytical tools, vocabulary and advice given by fishery scientists.
- be able to participate in multi-disciplinary teams dealing with natural resources, irrespective of their original disciplinary background
- have knowledge to follow further courses on ecological assessment and population management
- be more experienced within fieldwork and fishing
- rehearse general research methods and skills

If you pass the examination in this course, you will get an reduction in credits (as stated below), if you previously have passed the following courses:

Introductory book on fishery biology, as well as hand-outs, summary sheets and University rules posted in Fronter (virtual classroom), are obligatory. All lab exercises, field reports and seminars, as well as lecture presentations distributed to students, are recommended reading. Students should be familiar with introductory texts on biology, statistics and scientific writing. Most readings, exercises and other information about the course are available in Fronter.Assessment
Essay and seminar presentation. (50% of final mark).
Written examination, 4 hours (50% final mark).
Grad scale: A-F, where F is not passed.
If not passed, a re-sit exam will be arranged for both the essay and the written examination in the next semester.
