Production and Growth in Polar Areas
About the course
The subject deals with population dynamics and growth in pelagic and benthic organisms i boreal/polar areas and interactions between organism groups. The course covers methods and regulatory mechanisms for primary production in phytoplankton and ice algae, and secondary production at lower trophic levels, especially zooplankton and benthos. Another theme is population dynamics and models. In addition to lectures, the course consists of article seminars on current research themes, laboratory and computation exercises and, if possible, a cruise.
Admission requirements
Local admission, application code 9371 - - Master`s level singular course.
Admission requires a Bachelor`s degree (180 ECTS) or equivalent qualification, with a major in biology of minimum 80 ECTS.
Objectives of the course
- Know the size distribution of organisms in the ocean in northern/Arctic regions.
- Know the differences between biomass and production.
- Know the main methods for measuring primary and secondary production.
- Have thorough understand the mechanisms that regulate production in the ocean.
- Know basic population dynamics and understand the models used therein.

Assessment
Portifolio assessment: One cruisereport, one essay and one oral presentation. The exam will be assessed with a graded scale of five marks from A to E for pass and F for fail. The final grade for the course is based upon a complete evaluation of the various components in the portifolio assessment.
There will be a re-sit examination for students that did not pass the previous ordinary examination.
