From Individuals to Ecosystems
About the course
The course builds on prevailing ecological understanding from the level of individuals to populations and communities and finally to the ecosystem level. Each level will be addressed through current theoretical frameworks and methodologies within the associated research disciplines such as ecophysiology, life history, population, community and ecosystem ecology. The course will provide insight into how abiotic environmental factors and biotic interactions affect biodiversity, biological production in species and ecosystem function in different ecosystems. The course also examines how the adaptation of individual organisms to environmental variation in space and time can provide dynamics and structure at the population, community and ecosystem level.

All applicants: The course requires basic knowledge in biology and ecology at university level. Basic knowledge in chemistry and mathematics is an advantage.

Credit reduction
If you pass the examination in this course, you will get an reduction in credits (as stated below), if you previously have passed the following courses:
- BIO-2102 Ecological theory (Ecology 2a) 10 stp
Teaching methods
Language of instruction and examination
The language of instruction is English and all of the syllabus material is in English. Examination questions will be given in English, but may be answered either in English or a Scandinavian language. When only Scandinavian students attend, language of instruction is Scandinavian.Recommended reading/syllabus

Assessment
4 hours written exam. Grade: A-F, F is failed. In order to sit an examination, the student must complete and gain approval for any coursework requirements.
Coursework requirements: participation on seminars and computer lab.
