About the course

Theoretical

Practical examples will be taken from plant genomics, but the course is suitable for biologists in all fields. Topics of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics will be covered. The course will concentrate on data mining and the use of bioinformatics for the analysis of genes and proteins.

Students will work web-based for the course to perform computer based tasks and prepare a seminar talk on one of the subjects.

Admission requirements

PhD students or holders of a Norwegian master´s degree of five years or 3+ 2 years (or equivalent) may be admitted. Valid documentation is a statement from your institution that you are a registered PhD student, or a Master´s Diploma with Diploma Supplement / English translation of the diploma. PhD students are exempt from semester fee

Course teaching is conditional to a minimum of 4 and maximum of 10 students.

If more than 10 applicants, priority will be given as follows: 

  • Participants admitted to the PhD programme at UiT
  • Participants in the Associate Professor programme (Førstelektorprogrammet)
  • PhD candidates from other universities
  • People with a minimum of a Master's degree (or equivalent), who have not been admitted to a PhD programme

 

PhD students register for the course through StudentWeb. The registration for spring semester starts in the middle of December.

Objectives of the course

A web-based course aimed to give PhD students theoretical and practical knowledge in the area of functional genomics.

Credit reduction

If you pass the examination in this course, you will get an reduction in credits (as stated below), if you previously have passed the following courses:

  • HEL-8023 Genomics in Clinical and Biomedical Research 4 stp

Teaching methods

4 h lecture. 5 h seminars. 18 h computer work (Web-based).

Language of instruction and examination

The language of instruction is English and all of the syllabus material is in English. Examination questions will be given in English, but may be answered either in English or a Scandinavian language.

Recommended reading/syllabus

The curriculum for this course will be a collection of selected primary literature which will be available on the web.

Assessment

Oral seminar presentation and participation in group discussions. Grade: Pass/fail.
