Young Scientist Forum – ARCTOS PhD student workshop II

Theoretical.

The course will not be run if fewer than 5 students register for it. Maximum number of students is 20 due to costs for the workshop. These costs are covered by ARCTOS.

Every year the ARCTOS research network arranges a PhD student workshop, normally in concert with the Arctic Frontiers conference in Tromsø at the end of January. The goal of the workshop is to introduce the students to writing research proposals, interdisciplinary teamwork, and the culture and industry of the northern regions. Students will attend a 5-day seminar during which they will prepare a project proposal for funding to an imaginary research grant. During the workshop, there will be lectures and exercises about proposal writing, network building and about scientific topics relevant to the conference theme. General lectures on art, local history, economics or political science complete the learning experience. The students will also attend a number of excursions (e.g. visiting museums, art gallery, etc).

Prior to registering for this course, potential participants need to apply for the workshop. The call for applications will be published on the ARCTOS website (http://arctos.uit.no). After receiving a confirmation of acceptance at the workshop they can formally apply to be taken up for the course at the university. Prior to registering for this course, students will also need to submit an abstract for a poster or oral presentation at the Arctic Frontiers conference and will need to receive a confirmation from the conference. Students have to participate at the entire conference and either give an oral presentation or present a poster during the conference.

This workshopis the same as BIO-8516, but BIO-8517 is for students taking the workshop a second time.

This course is for students who already have taken BIO-8516. PhD-students who want to take the workshop course twice during the PhD study, must register for BIO-8517 the second time.

Who can apply as a singular course student:

• PhD student enrolled at another institution than UiT. PhD students must upload a document from their university stating that there are registered PhD students. This group of applicants does not have to prove English proficiency and are exempt from semester fee.
• Holders of a master´s degree of five years or 3+2 years (or equivalent) may be admitted. These applicants must upload a Master´s Diploma with Diploma Supplement / English translation of the diploma. Applicants from listed countries must document proficiency in English. Students who have completed this couse will:

Knowledge

• have in-depth knowledge on the funding application process
• be in the forefront of the newest research topics in the fields covered by the conference
• apply knowledge on the funding process to develop own ideas on research proposals
• evaluate networks skills in an international forum

Skills

• can formulate scientific ideas and select appropriate methods to write a competitive, high-quality research proposal
• analyze and improve own networking skills such as verbal and non-verbal communication, active listening, …

General competence

• can work in an interdisciplinary, international group on a common goal
• debate and orally present in groups
• can communicate research to scientists outside their field
• understand their role as scientists in society and other aspects of their science (culture, history)

Language of instruction and examination

PhD students at UiT register for the course through StudentWeb before 1 February. The registration starts in middle of December.

Other applicants apply for admission through SøknadsWeb before 1. December. Application code 9301. Applicants who are granted a seat, needs to register for classes and exam in StudentWeb before 1 February. The registration starts in middle of December.
