About the course

Theoretical

Practical examples will be taken from plant genomics, but the course is suitable for biologists in all fields. Topics of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics will be covered. The course will concentrate on data mining and the use of bioinformatics for the analysis of genes and proteins.

Students will work web-based for the course to perform computer based tasks and prepare a seminar talk on one of the subjects.

Admission requirements

Who can apply as a singular course student:

  • PhD student enrolled at another institution than UiT. PhD students must upload a document from their university stating that there are registered PhD students. This group of applicants does not have to prove English proficiency and are exempt from semester fee.
  • Holders of a master´s degree of five years or 3+2 years (or equivalent) may be admitted. These applicants must upload a Master´s Diploma with Diploma Supplement / English translation of the diploma. Applicants from listed countries must document proficiency in English. The course has 10 seats. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of places available, applicants will be ranked in this order: 1. PhD students at UiT 2. Participants in the Associate Professor programme at UiT (must hold a Master´s degree) 3. Registered PhD students from other universities 4. Applicants documenting that they have a Norwegian Master´s degree (or equivalent) The course will be cancelled if less than 4 participants.

Objectives of the course

A web-based course aimed to give PhD students theoretical and practical knowledge in the area of functional genomics.

Credit reduction

If you pass the examination in this course, you will get an reduction in credits (as stated below), if you previously have passed the following courses:

  • HEL-8023 Genomics in Clinical and Biomedical Research 4 stp

Teaching methods

4 h lecture. 5 h seminars. 18 h computer work (Web-based).

Language of instruction and examination

The language of instruction is English and all of the syllabus material is in English. Examination questions will be given in English, but may be answered either in English or a Scandinavian language.

Application deadline

PhD students at UiT apply for a seat by registering for classes in StudentWeb before 1 January. The registration starts 15 November.

Other applicants apply for admission through SøknadsWeb before 1. December. Application code 9301. For applicants who are granted a seat, a study right will be created, and these applicants apply for a seat by registering for classes in StudentWeb before 1 January.

The study right gives the applicant admission to register to other open PhD courses or apply for a seat to PhD courses where entry is limited.
