Course contents
The course focuses on properties of communication between computers, and the machinery needed to faciliate the communication. Among the properties are those arising from the uncertainty of delivery, the omnipresence of errors, and lack of global consistence and authority. There are many technical solutions; their design and implementation is discussed. As computers are used to manipulate "real world" valuables ever more demans are placed on Authentication, Authorization, and Auditing. Accross a network, only cryptographic technology can assist in upholding interesting properties. Both symmetric- and assymetric encryption will be presented and discussed.
Objective of the course
By connecting computers together, very large and surprisingly reliable systems can be build. At the fundation of all these endeavors are networking. The course is about properties and technologies for connecting computers together. As the systems are applied in ever more important environments, properties related to authenticity and possibly privacy becomes paramount. The latter implies cryptography.
Language of instruction and examination
The language of instruction is English and all of the syllabus material is in English. Examination questions will be given in English, but may be answered either in English or a Scandinavian language.
Teaching methods
Lectures: 30 hours, Colloquium: 30 hours, Laboratory: 30 hours.
Assessment methods
Portfolio assessment including up to 4 written assignments counting approximtely 50% and a final 4 hours written exam, counting approximately 50%. Oral presentation of the assignments and demonstration of a working system can be claimed. The grading is determined by an overall evaluation of the assignments and the written exam.

Assessment scale: Letter grades A-F.

Re-sit examination:
Section 22. Given early in teaching free semester, if the subject is compulsory in the study plan. A re-sit exam in the part or parts of the last ordinary exam which was not passed will be given.

Postponed examination:
Sections 18, 21 and 34. According to section 21, a postponed exam in the part or parts which the candidate was prevented from at the last ordinary exam will be arranged.

New ordinary examination:
There will not be given a new ordinary examination in the teaching free semester for this course.
