About the course

This course can be taken as a singular course.

Tourism is one of the largest industries in the world, and there is an increased need for tourism management knowledge. This course in tourism management aims to provide an introduction to tourism management, that will enable the students to understand tourism both from a supply and demand side.

The students will gain knowledge of several aspects that are important to comprehend the dynamics of tourism.

By active use of cases the students will be trained to think about how sustainable development can be maintained within international tourism. The course is taught in a way that focus on co-creative learning activities and practices. Discussion based lectures, seminars, cases, and company visits.

Admission requirements

Nordic applicants: Generell studiekompetanse

International applicants: Higher Education Entrance Qualification and certified language requirements in English.

Objectives of the course

Knowledge:

After completion of the course the candidate will:

  • Have broad knowledge of tourism industry.
  • Have knowledge of the history of tourism and the factors that have led to tourism development.
  • Have knowledge of major destinations and the resources on which they are based.
  • Have knowledge of tourist markets and be able to explain various segmentation criteria.
  • Have broad knowledge of the basics of tourism research.
  • Have knowledge of research and theories within the field of tourism, which are relevant for management of tourism and hospitality companies.
  • Understand management of tourism and hospitality companies.
  • Understand marketing of travel and hospitality businesses.

Skills:

  • Be able to describe aspects important for destination development.
  • Be able to evaluate destinations by use of relevant theory.
  • Be able to analyze the pros and cons of a destination and suggest areas for further development.
  • Have the ability to apply tourism theories in order to establish the viability of destinations and attractions.
  • Have the ability to give examples of and discuss various possibilities and limitations related to tourism development and growth.

General competence:

  • Is able to evaluate the potential possibilities and challenges of tourism in a critical and analytic manner.
  • Is able to debate current issues in tourism.
  • Has insights into potential development areas of the tourism industry.
  • Is able to carry out written projects reflecting on the various facets of tourism.
  • Can exchange ideas and views on the tourism industry by using relevant theories.
  • Is aware some of the relevant cultural aspects related to international tourism

There will be a compulsory group assessment. The assignment must be approved before the students qualify for the exam.

Approved coursework requirements will be valid for 4 continuous semesters, counting from the first submitted coursework.
