About the course
The course is available as a singular course.
PhD students at UiT register for classes and exam in StudentWeb before 1. September. The registration starts in middle of May.
Other applicants apply for admission to singular course on PhD level. Application code: 9301.
For applicants who are granted a seat, a study right will be created, and these applicants apply for a seat by registering for classes in StudentWeb before 1. September.
The student must register for the course every semester. For the exams, the student registers only once, in the last semester of thesis submission.
The course on polar marine ecosystems lasts for the whole PhD study and consists of seminar attendance and presentations. The student will have to attend the regular ARCTOS meetings on selected topics throughout the PhD period (ARCTOS seminars and colloquia). In addition, the student will have to present the progress of their thesis in three presentations (early, middle and final phase), in front of other students, post-docs and senior scientists. Two senior ARCTOS members act as censors and give feedback on each of the three presentations.
In addition, students have to attend a 3-5-day meeting once a year (ARCTOS Days), where ARCTOS participants gather to discuss scientific and practical issues related to Arctic and Antarctic marine research and PhD level education. Typically, students organize a one-day workshop on a soft skill topic, such as presentation technique, leadership skills, etc. The other meeting days all ARCTOS members are invited. Students and seniors give presentations, attend a poster session and discuss the functioning of the network, project proposals, etc in workshops or informal settings.
Admission requirements
The student has to be a member of the ARCTOS PhD network to participate in this course. PhD students are exempt from semester fee.

- UiT PhD students who wants to take a course that is not approved in their instruction component
- PhD student enrolled at another institution than UiT
Who can apply as a singular course student:
- PhD student enrolled at another institution than UiT. PhD students must upload a document from their university stating that there are registered PhD students. This group of applicants does not have to prove English proficiency and are exempt from semester fee.
- Holders of a master´s degree of five years or 3+2 years (or equivalent) may be admitted. These applicants must upload a Master´s Diploma with Diploma Supplement / English translation of the diploma. Applicants from listed countries must document proficiency in English.
