Video and podcast
How to make your own videos
You can create great videos yourself, and a mobile camera is often good enough.
Create a simple plan for:
- What you are going to capture
- Where you are going to shoot
- The order in which you will shoot
- Where the video will be uploaded and shared

Hold the camera the right wayt: Portrait (vertical) is best for social media, while landscape (horizontal) is better for YouTube, Viten-TV, and TV.
Get good (enough) quality: Film in full HD or better if needed. Check the settings in your mobile camera app or the camera you are using. HD is sufficient for social media, 4K is usually a waste of resources
Remember to enable airplane mode when filming with your mobile.
Also, check out our photography tips – they often apply to video as well.

Printvennlig innhold: Choose the right settings
Go phisically closer to the subject than your gut instinct tells you. Try to frame your subject so there isn't a lot of empty space above them.
Make sure the microphone and lens are not covered, especially when using the built-in microphone. You can use wired mobile headphones as a microphone.
Lock focus (on phones) by holding your finger on the subject.
Support the camera with a tripod, against a wall, or stabilise it with one hand and your elbow to avoid shaking.

Printvennlig innhold: Get close and keep the camera steady
It might not be necessary to edit the video. Try filming everything in one shot – that’s often sufficient for social media.
If you know you’ll need to edit, film an extra 1-2 seconds when you start and stop filming.
Use phone apps or default apps like Clipchamp (Windows )or iMovie (Mac) for easy editing.

Advice before starting a podcast
1. Evaluate the usefulness
Ask yourself: Do I really need a podcast? Do I have the time, equipment and resources?
To reach a large audience, consider other channels first – like be a guest at other podcasts, tip the media or writing an op-ed.
Podcasts are a good match for reaching smaller groups or scientific fields, or as a resource in teaching. But it takes a lot of work and thorough planning.
2 Seek advice and inspiration
Listen to podcasts from UiT at uit.no/podkaster, or contact contact section for communication for guidance.

1. Choose your audience
Read more about choosing a target audience.
2. Make a plan fo at least four episodes, ideally more
What will the subjects be? Is this relevant to the target audience?
3. Decide the format of your podcast
Monologue or dialogue? Do you want guests? Do you want sound effects or music? How long should an episode be?

If you want a studio setting, you can book a podcast studio at Result.
In general, record in settings with good acoustics. Inside cars or closets can be good options in a pinch.

Printvennlig innhold: Get good (enough) sound quality
You’ll need a sound editing program, and you need to know how to use it.
On Mac, you can use the free and pre-installed app Garageband. Audacity is a free alternative for Windows. UiT has a licence agreement with Adobe for the progam Audtion (2500 NOK per 2025)

Printvennlig innhold: You need to edit
For listeners to discover your podcast, you will need to upload it to, for instance, Spotify for Creators or Buzzsprout. UiT does not provide or recommend any specific hosting.
When published, you need to find people’s ears. One way is sharing on social media and tagging UiT.
A uniform, visual design is advised for easy recognizability. You’ll find templates, logos and guidelines at Graphical services (Norwegian only).
