Situated in the arctic city of Tromsø, the Academy offers a particular vantage point towards an increasingly significant geopolitical region. The Academy opened its doors in the fall of 2007 as Norway’s fourth art academy, hosting the world’s northernmost fine arts school and programmes in Creative Writing and Landscape Architecture.
We are located at Grønnegata 1 in the Centre of Tromsø – on the premises of the old brewery Mack Ølbryggeri. Studentsamfunnet Driv – the Student House – is located in the same city block. Close by you will find Tromsø Center for Contemporary Art (Tromsø Kunstforening). It is a five minutes’ walk down town where you will find Nordnorsk kunstmuseum and other art producers and presenters we are in close cooperation with.
The Academy of Arts offers you access and workshops for wood, metal, paint, enamel, ceramics, 3D printing, sound- and video editing, plotters etc. We have a Black Box, Library, shared kitchen/canteen, seminar rooms and customized studio spaces. Additionally, there is a student run gallery – Galleri Snerk.
To help facilitate our students professional lives we nurture good relations with Tromsø Center for Contemporary Art (Tromsø Kunstforening), Nordnorsk kunstmuseum, Kurant Visningsrom, Ordkalotten, Tromsø People’s Kitchen, Small Projects, the artists at Kysten – Troms fylkeskultursenter, local authorities and many more. Our students describe Tromsø as a town where it is easy to become acquainted with like-minded people and get involved in activities which allows for establishing useful contacts and relationships for the future.
