Andreia Plaza-Faverola

Job description

I do research on gas hydrates, fluid migration and natural seepage systems. I specialize in marine seismic methods and its integration with petrophysical data for subsurface characterization. I am particularly interested in how regional geological processes influence sediment deformation and the migration of fluids in continental margins. My ongoing projects focus on quantifying the impact of tectonic and glacially induced stress on seafloor methane emissions.

Current project example: SEAMSTRESS (https://site.uit.no/seamstress/) - Tromsø Research Foundation (TFS) and Young Talent Frinatek (NFR) grants.

I am currently assistant lead in RU4 within the center iC3. I represent permanent academic staff in the faculty board (2022-2026) and I am current leader (2021-2025) of the group Geophysics, Glaciology and Oceanography (GeGO) at the Department of Geosciences.

Research interests

I am particularly interested in field data integration and the development of Geomodels for the study of interacting processes in the shallow subsurface at continental margins. I research processes related to fluid transport and seepage in continental margins, gas hydrates stability in high latitude margins, the effect of glacially induced stress and tectonic forcing on fluid migration and gas transport, sub-seabed sediment fracturing. I like to work across disciplines and collaborate with numerical modelers for integrated data analyses.

Teaching

I’m currently developing the course “Integrated Geological and Geophysical interpretation” (GEO-3138/8138). In this course the students work with case studies from Arctic continental margins to understand complex Earth system interactions.
