Sustainable Technology and Safety (STS)
The aim of the research group is to create, collect, and communicate knowledge in the area of sustainable technology and safety. The research area of the group is multidisciplinary in nature, involving various fields of engineering and its management, such as renewable energy and power systems, marine industries, transportation, mining, and process industries.
Sustainability
Sustainable development is commonly defined as development that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (Our Common Future, Bruntland commission, 1983). Sustianability is often described as having three dimensions, enviromental, societal and economic, which all need to be satisfied. The global community in the United Nations has agreed on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
Safety and Environment
The safety and environment research aims to reduce the negative environmental impact from increasing industrial activities, to promote a safe living and working environment. The research focuses on investigation and mitigation of the environmental problems in the Arctic, environmental impact assessment and the challenges under global climate change context. The research can aid the sustainable development of industry activities and improvement of academic knowledge in this area.
