Information for Master's Students

Welcome to the Department of Language and Culture!

On this page you will find information that is vital as a student on the two-year English-taught MA programmes in English Acquisition and Multilingualism, English Literature - and Theoretical Linguistics. We recommend that you become familiar with the information found here. If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact hsl-instadm@uit.no or the academic contact person.

The contract is important - it documents your rights and responsibilites regarding the master's thesis work.

The contract should be signed by both you and your supervisor. We kindly ask you to submit the signed contract to your supervisor during the first year of study. The supervisor and the student must retain signed copies of the contract. The contract is available here (PDF).

Students admitted to a master's programme at the Department of Language and Culture can make use of the following study rooms:

  • Teorifagbygget, house 5, level 2 (rooms 5.220, 5.223, 5.224, 5.225, 5.226 and 5.233)
    • Contact person: Toril Storø (tst128@post.uit.no )

There is a contact person who has an overview of available study room spots. When you are assigned a spot, you can contact HSL-instadm@uit.no, and you will sign a key contract and be given a key to the study room. When you have completed your MA degree, please remember to return the key.

From April 1, 2025, assignments will only be submitted in WISEflow. Guidance for students will be published on "All About Exams" at UiT at the end of March.
The deadlines for submitting the master's thesis are May 15 in the spring semester and November 1 in the fall semester.

The deadline expires at 2:00 PM on the day of submission.

A template for the cover page can be found here.

You can find detailed information about submitting your master's thesis here. We recommend familiarizing yourself with this information well in advance of your submission.

The IT Department has created an information page for writing and formatting long Word documents. UiT also offers courses in Word formatting as well as courses in other useful software like EndNote. Information about this can be found on the IT Department's or the University Library's websites. You can also find information about relevant courses for master's students in the right-hand margin of this page.

If you wish to view previously submitted master's theses, you can find them in Munin.

Master's students have access to copying machines outside of the study rooms. More information on this here.

On the web page to the University Library you can find information about lending, search help, useful resources such as dictionaries and encyclopedias as well as tips on study technique, and how to write and cite.
