Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen/ Summary of the thesis
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) is a crucial player in cellular biology, holding a key role in development, gene expression regulation, and disease pathogenesis.

This study employs high-throughput data and bioinformatics tools to investigate lncRNAs in ulcerative colitis (UC). Initially, the study identified a set of previously uncharacterized lncRNAs. These lncRNAs can distinguish UC patients from healthy individuals and may serve as potential diagnostic markers. Combining DNA methylation with lncRNA expression deepened our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying UC pathogenesis.

The combination of data from independent studies in a publicly available dataset revealed several differentially expressed lncRNAs that are linked to colorectal cancer (CRC) development—a life-threatening risk for UC patients. These studies underscore the potential role of lncRNAs in UC, offering insights into disease mechanisms, diagnostic markers, and therapeutic avenues.
