Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen:

This dissertation bridges analyses of the gender dynamics of the 2020-2021 Belarusian protest movement with discussions of the protests’ music. The findings suggest that masculinized rock music continued to be most frequently associated with the expression of political sentiment and protest. However, diverse musical aesthetics characterized the protests, and definitions of political music and protest music varied. Furthermore, protest music was frequently represented as having incomplete power to signify the ideas of the movement or serve its purposes. The wide variety of music at play in the protests, then, indicates a reimagination of the political.

The thesis also finds that attempts to narrativize the protests using music often invoked gendered symbolism. The articles reveal a range of understandings of gender and its relation to political power, challenging gender’s coherence as a category of social intelligibility.

Finally, this thesis seeks to specify gender’s role in political imaginaries as articulated through music. It finds that characterizations of gender’s relationship to music often contradict characterizations of music’s relationship to politics and the State. A gender perspective therefore reveals a fuller set of relations between music and the political.
