CARE: Combining interactive AI language tutors with digital linguistic resources for specialized language learning in the healthcare sector
The project aims to transform workplace language training for migrant healthcare professionals by integrating AI-powered conversational tutors with advanced linguistic resources grounded in Pedagogical Construction Grammar.
More specifically, CARE seeks to equip learners with innovative AI tools and linguistic materials to master professional communication skills in Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish, focusing on domain-specific language essential for effective doctor-patient interactions and high-quality care. Globally, it aims to enhance professional integration and employability of migrant learners, aligning with Nordic social policies.
To achieve this, CARE fosters collaboration between research teams from UiT The Arctic University of Norway, the University of Gothenburg, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and the Technical University of Denmark. Together, our efforts aim to create a blueprint for AI tools tailored to individual learners' needs.
The project will deliver four key innovations:
- SnakKIs (an AI-powered chatbot for learners of Norwegian),
- an AI-based Language Tutor for second language learners of Danish, and
- expanded constructicon resources for Swedish and Norwegian, focusing on healthcare-specific language patterns.

The CARE project is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers, under the educational grant program “Nordplus Nordic Languages” ((https://nordplusonline.org/; project number NPLA-2026/10008, network support) for a period of two years from 08/2026 to 08/2028.
