Training on Strengthening One Health Capacity for Integrated Disease Prevention and Response
The Africa Center of Excellence for Water Management (ACEWM) at Addis Ababa University, in collaboration with the One Health NORHED II Project, has launched a three-day training program under the theme, “Strengthening One Health Capacity for Integrated Disease Prevention and Response Among Human and Animal Healthcare Workers.” This initiative reflects the commitment of ACEWM and the One Health NORHED II Project to enhancing professional capacity, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and promoting integrated approaches to disease prevention and response.
The training brings together human and animal healthcare professionals, environmental health experts, and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen their knowledge, skills, and capacity for coordinated disease prevention, preparedness, detection, and response. It provides an important platform for enhancing cross-sectoral collaboration and promoting a shared understanding of the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, which lies at the core of the One Health approach.
The program is facilitated by a multidisciplinary team of trainers drawn from various departments and colleges of Addis Ababa University, whose academic and professional expertise is closely aligned with One Health principles and practice. The trainers represent the College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture (CVMA), College of Natural and Computational Sciences (CNCS), College of Health Sciences, and College of Technology and Built Environment. Their diverse backgrounds provide participants with an interdisciplinary perspective on the complex interactions among human, animal, and environmental health.
Throughout the training, participants engage in presentations, discussions, and practical learning activities designed to strengthen their capacity to identify, prevent, and respond to emerging and re-emerging health threats. Particular emphasis is placed on integrated approaches, effective coordination, information sharing, and collaborative action across sectors, all of which are essential for addressing complex public health challenges.
The Africa Center of Excellence for Water Management (ACEWM) at Addis Ababa University is committed to advancing education, research, capacity development, and knowledge exchange in areas that contribute to sustainable development and improved human well-being. Through its training programs and collaborative initiatives, ACEWM continues to create opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, stakeholder engagement, and professional development, while supporting efforts to build resilient health systems and promote sustainable health outcomes.
